TrueCrypt is one of the best encryption tools available these days. And the best part is that it is open source in nature and thus a freeware download. TrueCrypt not only protects your data in your hard disk, but it also has a useful feature for your USB Security.
TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decrypted right before it is loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc).
TrueCrypt Portable Mode – Security for USB Flash Drives
TrueCrypt can run in so-called portable mode, which means that it does not have to be installed on the operating system under which it is run.
There are two ways to run TrueCrypt in portable mode:
- After you extract files from the TrueCrypt self-extracting package, you can directly run TrueCrypt.exe. To extract files from the TrueCrypt self-extracting package, run it, and then select Extract (instead of Install) on the second page of the TrueCrypt Setup wizard.
