Why You Need an Alternative to Windows Copy
Windows Copy command is something, which is learnt by every Windows user right in the beginning. It is one the basic commands.
But it is not perfect. There are many situations, when Windows Copy File command is an irritation and you desire to have a better tool. This is specially important when you are copying a lot of files at one go.
Some of the situations may be; say you are in the middle of copying say 1000 files, and suddenly Windows encounters a corrupt file and aborts the entire process. You have to start it again.
Or, you may lose a connection between the source and the destination folder and you will have to re-start the process.
Or, you might be willing to copy files from different folders at one go, and it is very inconvenient to open different folders one-by-one and give a separate command for each file copying.
Need of a File Copying Tool
In such a situation, you may need a file copying tool, which handles such situations pretty well.
TeraCopy is one such file copy program, which I love for its speed. It is definitely a tool worth trying, if you have to copy huge amount of data, and the speed of copying is more important. It will speed up file copying and is bound to save you few minutes and lots of irritation.
There is a nice video, which captures how TeraCopy Speeds Up File Copying as compared to Windows File Copy command.
Besides faster file copying, other features of TeraCopy are as follow.
- Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
- Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
- Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
- Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.
- Full Unicode support.
TeraCopy file copy software is free for home users. But if you are a Pro user, you will have to buy the Pro version for $19.95. It gives you added features such as ability to select files with the same extension/same folder, remove selected files from the copy queue and get free updates and priority support.

EXtremeCopy is an extremely fast copy file, it’s speed almost 2 times than TeraCopy 1.22 when copy large size of mutiple files
Please be careful with Terra Copy. I don’t like this program at all. It really screwed up my files when copying folders with very deep subfolders. I am going to try Richcopy and ExtremeCopy but with much more caution this time.
Make sure to use a folder synchronization tool to verify your copies are correct, and to correct the mistakes. (I like the one in Unreal Commander.)
I forgot to mention that Terra copy was no faster than Windows at all — exactly the same speed on 8Gb copy to USB drive.
You must be joking TeraCopy is way faster than Windows
Done some testing …
3 Movie Files 2,58Gb total
Normal Windows Copy from external (X) drive to C: 16′
Normal Windows Copy from C to external (X) drive: < 8'
TeraCopy from external (X) drive to C: 3'
TeraCopy from C to external (X) drive: 5'15"
Besides this look at this screenshot, achievd a staggering 26Mb/s speed with TeraCopy. http://i35.tinypic.com/am5q14.jpg
update: 2011 softpedia awards have confirmed that fast copy is the fastest of all . moreover its only 600 kb in size . I got it here ( official direct link) – http://adf.ly/16Luk .this is version 2.08
I’ve made a 1.22 GB file copy test and the results are:
ExtremeCopy Pro 2.0.4 – 35 sec.
FastCopy 2.08 – 35 sec.
KillCopy 2.85 – 45 sec.
SuperCopier 2.2 Beta – 47 sec.
Copy Handler 1.32 – 50 sec.
RichCopy 4.0.211 – 50 sec.
Windows XP (classic copy) – 52 sec.
FFCopy 1.0 – 58 sec.
TeraCopy Pro 2.2 – 1 minute 15 sec.
Ultracopier 0.2.0.15 – 1 minute 25 sec.
There is a un-clip video to show comparison between TeraCopy and Windows 7, maybe TeraCopy faster than Windows XP, but not Windows 7

TeraCopy is rather crappy.
I was about to copy a disk with over 1TB of sound libraries to a larger disk, before adding even more sound libraries.
I gave it a couple of chances, but it bugged out after a few minutes regardless of the folder depth and amount of data. A couple of times it just froze up and a couple of times it said some dll-file couldn’t be found.
As I write this, I run ExtremeCopy instead and it seems to work perfectly. It’s been working with the copying much longer than TeraCopy managed to stay alive and has already copied more files than TeraCopy managed during all my tries, so it seems to be much more stable.
Another option to check out is File Pilot Copy. 1 TB would be easy for it (it can do 60 TB update copies in a 12 hour window). They have a free “no registration required” eval download at http://www.filepilotsoftware.com . It is super fast, particularly for update copies, and has an easy to use GUI interface (but can also be run in a batch mode like a script).
Please don’t forget Ultracopier test vs teracopy
